God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
It is easy to put our hope and confidence in any number of temporary fixes. We look to financial security to shore us up against hard times. In our time of ease, we forget our frailty; we forget that all we hold dear in this life is not permanent!
The eternal God is always our help. He was the strength of God's people in the past. From Abraham through the Kings, Israel experienced the despair of being surrounded by enemies and the relief of God's deliverance.
Now we live during the care of the Holy Spirit over God's church. Even with all the struggles of the current day, God cares for His sheep.
Psalm 46 also points us forward to the glorious future of the Christian believer. We can trust that our Lord has the future firmly in His hands because Jesus rose from the dead. Because of His resurrection, we know that God's "present" help is real, even in a very uncertain future.
A secular, godless world knows that the only future thing that's certain is change. Those who trust in the changeless God believe in something even more certain: God's constant "present" help.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change
And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;
Though its waters roar and foam,
Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. (Psalm 46:2-3)
Whether past, present, or future, God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
