Family Bible Study - The responsibilities of each member of a Christian family according to the Holy Bible
A family that studies and grows together stays together. Many people have an idea of the duties of each family member based on today’s standards, but not many people have researched the role of each family member in scripture. God created each member of the family for a specific reason and purpose.
Husbands – Ephesians 5: 21- 33 says that a husband is the head of the household. They are to lead the family in every way: spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Verse 25 says, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” Husbands, you are to love your wives so greatly, that you would also sacrifice yourself in order to save her.
Through this action, the truest of love and faithfulness will be shown to all who hear. Not only will love and faithfulness be seen, but so will God. You will be a full representation of Christ and the selflessness He embodies. Remember that Eve was made of Adam’s rib so that she should always be protected, because they were of the same flesh and bone. This is why a husband is made the head of the household and should be respected as such.
Wives – Ephesians 5:21- 33 also details your duties according to God. Verse 22 says, “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” The word ‘submit’ has a very negative connotation attached to it these days, but it wasn’t such a negative word during biblical times. This does not mean you stand by and take abuse or anything else negative you can think of. Think of it more as revering to husband through the respect you have for the Lord.
God appointed husbands as the head of the household for a reason and wives need to respect that decision. Let your husbands lead your family and understand that he is doing it out of respect for the Lord as well. Everything is working for the benefit of the father.
Now, there will be times in marriage when your husband might not be leading your family or you think there is too much tension for you to respect your husband. 1 Peter 3: 1- 7 deals with this exact situation. Verse 1 says, “Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of wives…”
If a husband is not reading or hearing the word of God, then the way the wife speaks can turn a man back to God. This means to respect your husband at all times and speak to him in love. If you can turn him back to God, then you need to make sure you speak to him in a way to make him want to turn back to God. If you address him with contempt and anger in your voice, then that’s all that he is going to know. He won’t know the love of Christ through your actions. That’s the ultimate duty of a wife.
Children – Ephesians 6: 1- 2 tells your duties in the family. You are to respect your parents as you would respect God. Understand that they are your parents for a reason and they are obeying the Lord in order to raise you correctly. They have been given knowledge and wisdom in order to bring you up in the word of God. It might seem like they are mean and cruel at times, but know that they are molding you into the image of God and everything they are doing is in your best interest. Be thankful for parents who love God and obey Him, even if it means they have to deal with a child who doesn’t like them.
