Great Bible Quotes From The Gospel Of John 15:12-13
This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
Jesus did so many incredible and wonderful things. He made the blind see, the lame walk, and raised the dead back to life. The greatest thing the Lord did was to sacrifice himself on the cross for our sins. Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep...I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again." (John 10:11-18)
As amazing as that is, perhaps it is even more amazing that the Lord calls those who trust in Him "friends." In John 15:12-13, Jesus follows His commandment to love one another with the demonstration of that love. Jesus was going to lay down his life for those He loved; He would lay down His life for His friends.
From our human perspective, "friendship" is usually a two-way street. We are generally only "friends" with those who are "friends" with us. But Jesus calls the disciples (and Christian believers) His "friends" because Jesus would carry the burden of this "friendship." He would be crucified so that, by faith, all undeserving sinners could be His friends.
It's been said that to have a friend you have to be a friend. Jesus didn't need us as His friends, but he laid down His life so that we who were God's enemies (Romans 5:10) could be in friendship with God.
